Write down an Alternative Ending of To Build Fire by Jack London
During the writing process, authors frequently consider alternative endings to their work before arriving at the one we see in print. When we read a novel or a story, we might imagine a different ending than that which the author has devised. This exercise allows you to revise the ending of one of the short stories you have read to one you deem more satisfactory. Pick from the following: The Third Day, Ninth Story, The Wife of Bath’s Tale, Young Goodman Brown, The Overcoat, The Song, The Cask of Amontillado, The Death of Ivan Illych, To Build a Fire, and The Heart Lover. The ending must, however, follow logically from what has come before in terms of the characters’ actions and personalities and offer a plausible alternative that you develop fully, writing in the same point of view as the original story and using dialogue as appropriate. The word count for this assignment is 500 words. At the top of your page, you should provide a one paragraph argument for the alternative ending, as if you were the author writing to your publisher asking for a second edition. Be sure to explain what you found unsatisfactory in the first from the audience’s/writer’s perspective and how your version addresses these considerations.
