Write a Literary Analysis on Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper”
For this essay, instead of exploring your personal reactions to the story, as in a reader-response paper, you will focus on an in-depth analysis of the story’s various elements. You should not use personal pronouns (e.g., “I was concerned about the protagonist…” or “The story led me to think about an experience I had…”). (See the sample paper on pp. 45-7.) Start by reading 1918 – 1930 in our anthology. As you compose, emphasize symbolism, narration and point of view, character, and historical/ideological context as you strive to identify a theme.
Requirements
- In your introductory paragraph, state a clear thesis (as demonstrated on 1920 – 1). Use the template we’ll continue discussing in class. (See 1926 – 7 for additional pointers on constructing a strong introduction.)
- In your essay’s body:
- Use concrete details (e.g., characters’ names and in-depth analysis of the story’s events) to illustrate your main points and support your central argument (thesis).
- Identify relevant quotes from your chosen story using paragraph numbers. Explain how each cited segment leads you to identify a particular theme.
- Minimize plot summary. Assume your audience is familiar with the events and characters in the narrative.
- Use your concluding paragraph to summarize your main points and restate your thesis. (See 1929 for more details.)
Format
Papers must be typed, double-spaced, use MLA format, one-inch margins all around, with left-justified text, 12-point Times New Roman font. Failure to adhere to these guidelines will adversely affect your grade.
