January, 2020 Version: write a critical reflection about your demonstration of at least one
practice skill chosen, outlining ways you can improve your practice, *Critical reflection must be
an analysis that examines meaning and relationships, and is not merely a description of events.
Responding to the following questions will help you write a critical reflection: 1. What skill did
you demonstrate in your videorecording? 2. Why is this skill important in engaging with a client?
3. Identify the strengths of your demonstration. 4. Are there any ways you could improve your
demonstration of this skill? 5. How will you improve your practice? Critical reflection is a vital
skill for social work practice, as explained below: “Critical reflection is a process (and theory) for
unearthing individually held social assumptions in order to make changes in the social world.
Reflection is more than just thinking about an experience. It involves a deeper look at the
premises on which thinking, actions, and emotions are based” (Fook & Gardner, 2007, p.14)

about social work practice (a process called deconstruction) and make connections between
these assumptions and your beliefs for your future practice (a process called reconstruction).

merely a description of events. You will need to develop a very basic case scenario in order to
demonstrate a skill on your video recording. Examples will be given in tutorial classes. A
