What is important to you in selecting a dental school? How will you make your decision about which school to attend?

There are many important factors that I would consider when selecting the school where I want to receive my dental education. The first is the clinical experience the schools offer. The earlier the clinical experience, the more a student can learn, gain practice and be more professional at different dental techniques. Another important factor I look at when choosing dental schools is research opportunities. I am very interested in doing research in subjects related to my future profession. One of the reasons that made me pursue a career in dentistry is to get the opportunity to do research that studies the relationship between oral health and heart diseases. My father was diagnosed with a heart valve problem a few years ago, and his doctor suggested that his poor oral health may have caused it since he was a child. After doing my research and talking to my father’s doctor, I found out that not enough research has been done regarding this critical subject. My future goal is to be able to get involved in research regarding this matter.

My father’s issue started when he was a child, so one of my goals is to reach out to the largest number of people, especially in communities that lack oral health education, and spread awareness between children, teenagers, and older people about the importance of oral health and its effects on the overall systemic health.

And finally, I want to be in a school where I can have interactive group work with my colleagues. I love making friends and getting to know people from diverse backgrounds, making many connections, learning from their knowledge, experiences, and backgrounds, and sharing mine with them.

I have had a passion for dentistry since I was nine years old. A few years ago, my father was diagnosed with a heart valve problem. His doctor suggested that his problem was due to his poor oral health since he was a teenager. My dad used to work with wires to create scientific projects, and sadly he would use his teeth to cut those wires. The implication was his poor oral health and weak teeth. After talking to my father’s doctor and doing some research, I found out that not enough research has been done regarding the relationship between oral health and heart diseases. This incident made me want to pursue dentistry to do more research about the relationship between oral health and heart disease and spread awareness of how important our oral health is and how it can affect the overall systemic health. In addition, I want to educate and warn children and teenagers of how important it is to take care of their teeth and oral health. The University of California San Francisco will be the best place to reach that goal and get involved in research with its world-renowned research accomplishments. I am self-motivated, I have been working very hard to pursue dentistry. Even though I have faced many difficulties along the way, I’m still dedicated and never stopped trying. Such a mentality is the case for me in all my life aspects. I will not give up on my patients, and I will do everything in my ability to help them make their life better.

Given the opportunity, I will achieve my goal and help find more information about the relationship between oral health and heart diseases. This will allow me to help many people with a condition such as my father’s. I aim to reach as many people as possible to educate and warn them about the importance of oral health.
