(Remember, as always, you are graded on how well you follow the instructions in the prompt.)

Background: Narrator is one of the key components of any story. In this homework assignment, you aim to see how changing the narrator—from Sanjeev to Twinkle—and analyze and comment on how it changes the meaning of the story.

Specifics:

Part 1. Preparation

  1. Choose what you think is an important passage in the story. This can be a turning point in the plot, a key moment of character development, a key moment of exposition, or something else—but be prepared to justify the passage you have chosen.
  2. This passage should not be less than two pages long, nor more than four pages. Ideally, strive for a single unified scene, a complete piece of exposition, a complete reflection in the mind of the character, etc. Inevitably you will have to choose a beginning and an end point, but strive to find a passage that stands on its own.
  3. Think about and annotate the passage. What is happening? What are the important symbols, actions, changes, etc.

Part 2. Writing:

  1. Rewrite the passage from Twinkle’s point of view. This will entail different elements, depending on the passage you have chosen, but may include things like:
    1. Changing the scene. The scene will have to follow Twinkle’s point of view, instead of Sanjeev’s.
    2. Changing the perspective.
    3. Changing and rewriting internal thought processes from Sanjeev’s to Twinkle’s.
    4. Changing, or modifying, the important symbols in the work. Certain things stand out to Sanjeev and are important for how he views the unfolding story. What things are important to Twinkle? What kinds of things would be important symbols for a story told from her perspective?
  2. IMPORTANT: This is a creative assignment. Do not just replace ‘Sanjeev’ with ‘Twinkle’. These character think, act, develop, grow, change and see the world in fundamentally different ways. You will need to create Twinkle’s point of view in your writing. It’s not a simple matter of replacement.

Part 3. Compose a short essay that explains the changes you have made.

  1. Explain any important changes you have made. What are the changes you think are the most pivotal/want to draw attention to? This should be about 1-1.5 pages long.
  2. Reflect on how, if at all, the meaning of the story has changed. This should be at least .5 pages long.

Part 4. Composition

  1. Create a front page. This page should include:
    1. Your name.
    2. A paragraph explaining the scene you have chosen, including the page number, and why you chose it.
  2. Create a works cited page in the format detailed in the tutorial.
  3. Put your front page, your rewritten scene, your analysis and your works cited together.
  4. Carefully edit your work for clarity, grammar, syntax and readability.
  5. When you have completed the assignment, save it as a .doc or .pdf.
  6. Upload the assignment.
