Go to the congress.gov (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. site and scroll to the bottom of the page, and from the “Site Content column at the far left of the page, select the “Legislation” link. There, in the left-hand column, under the “Congress” heading, select the “Show more” option, and then place a check-mark into the three most recent boxes (at the time of development this were boxes for “116,” “115,” and “114”). Next, under “Status of Legislation” on the left side place a check-mark in the box for “Introduced.” Finally, in the search box at the top of the page (i.e., where it says “Examples: hr5, sess9, “health care”), type the last name of the representative/senator you chose and click on the “Search” button to the right. A list should then appear which search results for bills which have information containing that individual’s name. Review the list for a bill introduced showing the person’s name as a “Sponsor.” If more than one such bill appears, you may choose whichever one of those you wish to use. If none appear with that person’s name, then use one of your other options (e.g., representative, other senator).

The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to pass laws. It is anticipated that the vast majority of you are represented in Congress by at least one representative and two senators; choose this representative/senator for this discussion. (Note: For any of you to which the foregoing may not apply, you may choose a member of the U.S. House of Representatives or U.S. Senate and inform your instructor who you have selected).
