Policy Question-The politics of religious and ethnic violence in India
You will write a five page single spaced in-depth research paper drawing from academic, historical, and contemporary sources and will propose an argument (thesis).
- The politics of religious and ethnic violence in India. India has long experienced religious and ethnic tension, but recently this has resulted in overt violence and calls for repression. Over the past year, inter-communal violence – particularly against Muslims – has risen dramatically. India was once one of the world’s most promising democracies. What are the psychological determinants of this recent rupture and descent into violence as well as anti-Muslim policies?
- This assignment focuses on developing a thesis-driven research paper. By this, I mean that you will develop an argument (a thesis) and will present evidence to support that thesis. The goal, essentially, is to shed light on the topic that you have picked. By the end of reading your paper, I should better understand the core elements of the topic and should understand (a) your argument, (b) the reasoning behind your argument, and (c) whether your argument is justified or not.
- You must draw heavily on academic, historical, and contemporary sources. Please draw from at least ten academic (peer-reviewed) sources in making your case. I generally expect 15 or more sources in an advanced-level academic paper.

- Generally, research papers follow a relatively prescribed structure:
- Title page (Links to an external site.) (not counted against your ten-page limit)
- Introduction. Introduce the overall topic, provide a quick overview of what you are going to argue, and provide a quick roadmap to the rest of the paper.
- Literature review. What existing research exists with regard to your topic? This is the section to introduce and define core concepts, to describe how different theories in political psychology interact with one another, and to explain existing work that has already touched on your topic. This is not simply a “data dump” – you should only include literature that directly speaks to your argument and the topic at hand.
- Argument/Thesis. This is the section in which you detail your argument as well as provide supporting evidence for it. If you argue that Modi’s individual psychology is a major factor driving inter-communal violence in India, you must justify it theoretically and you must provide evidence that your argument is correct. If you want to argue that genocide occurs due to social structures, be sure to demonstrate theoretical reasoning for this and to provide supporting evidence.
- Discussion. What are the larger implications of what you are arguing? Quickly restate your argument and findings, but then quickly move on to describe why this matters. What lessons can we take from this? Does your research make any predictions about the future, for example? Spend time thinking about this! This is not just a conclusion section.
- References. Not counted against your ten-page limit. All references must be complete and follow APA style. Many students lose points by simply
