Essay-Bacteria Behaving Tastefully
In this class we focus on Bacteria behaving badly. However, Bacteria are by far more beneficial than harmful, and one of the ways they help us out is to ferment foods. In this week’s discussion, you get a chance to take a break from bad bugs and disease and focus on foods that are made with the help of bacteria. Do a little research on your own and answer the following questions:
1. What is your favorite fermented food, and what ? Note: for this week’s exercise the food has to be made with the help of Bacteria. Sorry – no sourdough bread, beer, wine, or anything that uses yeast (that’s a fungus). Look around a bit and you’ll quickly find all kinds of foods that we only have thanks to beneficial Bacteria.
2. Do you or someone in your family make a fermented food? If so, what is it and what got you started making your own? Note: please don’t share recipes. Sometimes instructions that seem perfectly clear can be misunderstood and where fermentation is concerned, best not to risk it!
