In the past 30 years the average temperature in Colorado has risen by 2 degrees Fahrenheit (Gonzalez et al, 2021). This seems miniscule but it has resulted in a hotter, drier Colorado which has caused more frequent wildfires every year. These wildfires have lasting effects on our communities including a rise in smoke inhalation injuries, property damage, and people directly losing their lives to raging fires. According to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (2020), Colorado suffered from three major wildfires that destroyed more than half a million acres in land, and nearly 1,000 homes. Climate change has certainly had a profound effect on our planet, and my community is certainly feeling it with the wildfires every year.
Although climate change has caused more intense and frequent wildfires, there have been hundreds of documented wildfires throughout United States history. Climate change as an environmental issue is unprecedented and since I first learned about global warming as a child, government entities around the world have been working towards a solution. Regarding wildfires, our fire fighting professionals have made great strides at preventing and mitigating the damages caused by wildfires. The science of fire fighting has come a long way with forestry maintenance, controlled burns, and reactive measures when wildfires inevitably occur.
