Culture includes racial or ethnic group; religion; socioeconomic status; gender; age; mental health; cognitive, sensory, or physical disability; sexual orientation or gender identity; geographic location; or other characteristics historically linked to discrimination or exclusion. Reflect on you own experiences with persons of other cultures and become aware of any biases that you will need to relinquish in order to provide culturally congruent care. Consider the ways in which culture and ethnicity affect health. Which factors are modifiable? For which factors can nurses have an impact? Discuss traditions of other cultures you have seen that surprised you. How did you react? How will you react to cultural practices outside your experience as a nurses? How can you prepare yourself for these experiences? How does culture affect the meaning of disease and illness?
