Discuss stress and coping techniques.
Stress and coping techniques
General Instructions: This assignment is an interactive posting based discussion activity created to encourage interaction between students as well as student and instructor. Each discussion activity is focused on a central theme with corresponding questions. Your participation will be graded based on the completion of required tasks (listed below), and the depth of analysis and engagement in your posts- see grading rubric for DB posts.
For each discussion board activity, you are required to complete two elements:
2) Respond to at least 2 other student’s posts. Note: Responding posts can be posted up to 2 days after the deadline for your original post.
Remember the assignment is to get you talking about what you have discovered. Use specific examples both in your answers to the questions and to your response to other students’ postings.
Discussion Board Assignment 2 Instructions:
Based on the survey that the class took the discussion will focus on Stress and Coping techniques. Please go to chapter 3 to review the characteristics and terminology about stress management to complete this assignment.
First- review the Practical Strategies area on page 58– we will look at recognizing the signs of stress overload in our lives. Then, review the common stressors (pp 59-61) and stress management techniques listed (pp 64-67) to help you complete the assignment. After your review of the material –
1) Identify some of the warning signs of stress in your life-
From the following lists identify at least 1 sign or symptom from each area (Emotional, Physical, and Behavioral) that you are experiencing due to the stress response.
Emotional | Physical | Behavioral |
Anxiety | Chronic Fatigue | Overreacting to problems or difficult situations |
Unproductive worry | Weight loss or gain | Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs |
Anger and agitation | Migraine or tension headaches | Feeling “burned out” on school or work |
Trouble concentrating | Digestive problems | Withdrawing from relationships |
Mood swings | Odd physical symptoms that don’t seem to have a cause | Frequent bouts of crying |
Depression | Sleep disruption |
2) Describe what are the typical circumstances surrounding these signs and symptoms (example: I can’t sleep and feel very anxious the night prior to a big test. I also experience stomach problems and overreact to a situation when I feel stressed and overwhelmed).

3) Identify the top stressor that is prominent in your life right now- use the listed stressors from your textbook pp 59-62 in hard copy (What Are College Students’ Common Stressors). List at least one and no more than three. When you list your stressor(s) also identify a stress management technique that you have tried or want to try to combat each stressor – You can use your textbook as a reference or use a different source. Make sure you include your reference/citation in your post – (example: As I stated earlier, I get very anxious when I have a big test, and I know it is worse when I have not prepared for the exam. I would say one of my top three stressors falls under the Academic stressor category and specifically procrastination because I usually put off studying until the last possible minute. Now that I am more aware of this stressor, I would like to work on the suggestions listed for “Manage your Time Effectively” section in our textbook-pg. 64- especially the one that states “break down big jobs”. If I follow this advice, I believe that I would feel less overwhelmed.
