This week we are introduced to a concept that is crucial to geography: scale. Sayre (2009) provides us with an overview on the various definitions and uses of the term. Focusing in particular on Sayre’s discussion on “Scale as Relation” (100-102) and “Scale in the Discipline of Human Geography” (102-105), discuss the *politics of scale at play in Xi Jinping’s contemporary policies.
*The politics of scale refers to situations where one scalar level aligns or misaligns with another scale of its relation. In your response, reflect on what kind of scale Xi Jinping is operating at (or trying to produce and stabilize) and how this bumps up against the heterogeneity of China’s diverse provinces. Be sure to cite your sources in your response. In this response, you will likely draw from both Veeck and Pannell (2016) and Allison (2017).
