7023GIR: Political, Governance and Legal Environment – Assessment No 2. Guidance.
The task requires that students undertake an analysis of the policy sector in which they work or in
which they have a strong interest. The aim is to apply the concepts addressed in this course to
generate a coherent argument about the key actors and interests that comprise the policy sector
and the forces and influences that shape the policy sector. The report will draw on and be informed
by theoretical perspectives and practical observations of the dynamics of the policy sector, including,
where relevant, from personal experience. Your analysis should be 3000 words (plus attachments or
appendices as appropriate and if relevant).
What do you need to do?
Analyse the policy sector in which you work or have an interest in.
The aim is to develop:
A comprehensive overview of the political, legal and governance frameworks
pertaining to the sector;
An analysis of the key actors and interests that comprise the policy sector and the
forces; and
The influences that shape the policy sector.
The report will draw on and be informed by theoretical perspectives and practical
observations of the dynamics of the policy sector, including, where relevant, from personal
experience.
Structure?
For this assessment, there is no fixed structure so you can decide what you think works best.
Remember though to carefully think through how you will structure your paper in advance, and
make sure it is clear to the marker.
There will be a great deal of material to cover, so you will need to use your judgement and decide
what you will argue and where you will focus your analysis.
I encourage the use of headings and subheadings in this report.
