1). What is “media activism” and how is it different from traditional activism? Do you think, as Kido Lopez does, that media activism is ultimately about “cultural citizenship”? What are the limits and benefits of this approach? Do you think media activism is interested in “activism” or what Kido Lopez calls “cultural citizenship”?
2). Analyze what Kido Lopez calls “hashtag activism” and “fan activism.” What are the aims of these kinds of activism? What are the limits to “hashtag activism” and “fan activism”? Do you think that media activism can be more than about representation and being heard and seen?
3). Ono and Pham identify “mimicry and mockery” and “yellowface” as type of racism in the media today. What are some of the elements within “mimicry and mockery” and “yellowface”? What were some of the successful activist approaches to this problem in the context of Miss Saigon and Doghouse with JV and Elvis? What are some limits to this kind of activism?
