The themes shared are despair and determination. In episode 4 The New Latinos The economy is at risk when the Puerto Rican government sets a historic overhaul over millions and more of Puerto Ricans wanting to leave for the US mainland. Refugees trying to make a living, for example Manuel Capo and his family make a journey to the US and use his skills to start a furniture business that ends up thriving. (Ep 4). In episode 5 Prejudice and Pride, a fight for the discrimination and poverty a “Chicano” identity will arise from it. Rights are demanded for the Chicano schools be given the same level of education as the Anglos. In this political process the game is changed for the Chicanos. As revolutions come, so do individuals, Argentina, Cuba, Columbia, and Brazil are the fastest growing countries. By the 1950s there were 159 million Latin Americas, and only ten years later those numbers went up to 200 million. (Chasteen p253). Along with revolution, the demand for civil rights shook up society. Segregation nationwide, discrimination during the depression, as well as a lack of equality after WWII. (Mod 6)
